Superior Low Hydrogen Electrode for Carbon and Low Alloy Steels

Astro 616-A is a general purpose welding electrode.  It features excellent all positional welding characteristics.

 

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Astro 616-A is a controlled hydrogen, high tensile strength, ferritic electrode.

This high quality, all position, low amperage electrode features rapid deposition.

Deposits have good ductility, are dense, crack free and of x-ray quality.

Excellent for steels sensitive to cracking when welded with conventional mild steel electrodes.

Superior impact resistance at normal and sub-zero temperatures.

 

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS:

For welding carbon and low alloy steels, enameling steels and cold rolled steels or steels high in sulphur, phosphorus or other elements added to improve the machinability of the steel.

Recommended for maintenance work where better physical properties than those yielded by mild steel electrodes are required.

Excellent at welding pipelines, circular tube to plate welds and other types of joints subject to stress and strain.

 

QUALITIES:

  • Tensile strength: Up to 82,000 P.S.I. (565 MPa)
  • Yield Strength: Up to 70,000 P.S.I. (480 Mpa)
  • Elongation: 30 to 34%
  • Current: AD or DC

 

WELDING PROCEDURES:

Clean weld area of all foreign material.

Preheating is not required except on some highly hardenable steels to prevent hard spots at the fusion zone.

Hold a short arc, but do not whip, as this may cause porosity.

Stringer beads are recommended, weave beads may be used but not more than 3 times the diameter of electrode, when using the larger sizes of electrode, a drag technique is suggested.

Slag can be easily removed by chipping.
